Secure and Safe
"I decided to leave my abusive partner at the beginning of the year, I was beside myself thinking and feeling I had nowhere to go, all the domestic violence and homeless shelters in my city were full. Thankfully I was given the number to Survival House. The employee I had been speaking to that day, was the first one I met at the door, and I could not have been more relieved. Once I stepped inside I immediately felt safe and that I would be okay. Survival House assisted me with obtaining legal documents, making sure I had everything I needed, and even helped with things I wanted. They helped me find and sign up for housing, I even began working remotely while I was staying there (it was my first job in 2 yrs). I was able to find an apartment, they assisted in helping me find items needed to live on my own, and many resources.. A huge part of my starting over was my self esteem, the staff were so caring and encouraging. I knew starting over would be extremely difficult and Survival House made it as easy and seamless as possible. I continue to use their Outreach services weekly (if not more than once a week!). I am forever grateful to Survival House, their staff, and those that support them, if it was not for them I would not be where I am today."
Light at the End of a Tunnel
Survival House and their Outreach Center have majorly impacted my life for the better. One of the hardest times of my life was my sexual assault. The director at that time met me in the emergency room shortly after I arrived and held my hand as I cried. A complete stranger brought me so much comfort in a time of darkness where the light was nowhere in sight. The next day she helped me file for a restraining order. She sat with me in court and comforted me through the process. They calmed me down through the frustrating process of getting him arrested as well.
Serving at Survival House has shown me how to appreciate everyone's progress, no matter how little they seem. I am always reminded to be kind because no one chooses to be a victim of abuse and it takes courage to ask for help. I love working with all the staff because they have a burning passion for helping people feel appreciated and respected. I love coming to Survival because it is a safe place with a safe group of people who will help meet your needs, and not make you feel any less equal during the process. Volunteering here will give you various ways to help give back to the people in your community. You will never be limited to one thing here because there are so many ways to help impact the community!
